At The Discovery Academy we pride ourselves on the standard of Careers Information students receive. We have recently been awarded the Quality in Careers Standard which demonstrated our commitment to ensuring all of our students move onto positive destinations on leaving the Academy in Year 11. It is now Government Policy that all young people will be expected to continue in education or training. This is called raising the Participation Age (RPA)

What does this mean?

Young people who complete Year 11 in 2013 must continue in some form of learning until at least the end of the school year in which they turn 17 (Year 12).

Young people who complete Year 11 in or after 2014 will continue learning until at least their 18 Birthday (Year 12, Year 13).

This does not mean young people must stay on at school. They will be able to choose from one of the following:

  • Full time education: school sixth form or college
  • Apprenticeship
  • Foundation Learning offered at local training providers
  • Part-time education or training if a young person is employed, self-employed or volunteering full- time (defined as 20 hours or more a week)
